6-month Partial Tram Line Closure
Adelaide’s Glenelg Tram Line to Close for Six Months for Major Infrastructure Upgrade
What’s Happening
-
A full closure of the tram network from first service on Saturday 2 August through Sunday 3 August 2025 to prepare for major upgrade works.
-
From Monday, 4 August 2025, the Glenelg line between South Terrace and Moseley (Moseley Square, Glenelg) will remain closed until late January 2026, with full services expected to resume ahead of the 2026 school year.
Why It’s Necessary
This detailed work will:
-
Remove level crossings at Morphett Road (Morphettville) and Marion Road & Cross Road (Plympton)
-
Upgrade and rebuild the South Road tram overpass to integrate with the new North–South Corridor motorway infrastructure.
The combined investment is estimated at nearly AU$870 million, and is expected to dramatically improve safety, reduce congestion, and enhance reliability for both transport users and motorists.
Alternative Transport Arrangements
Adelaide Metro will operate substitute bus services to maintain connectivity during the closure period:
-
Bus routes GLN1 (all-stops), GLN2 (limited-stop), and GLN3 (express) will mirror tram frequency and capacity.
-
Buses will run every 10–20 minutes throughout the day and night, increasing to every 5 minutes during weekday peaks.
-
Passengers can transfer at South Terrace tram stop, where substitute buses will serve stops located as close as practicable to the original tram stops.
Additional Impacts and Considerations
-
Several road closures and detours will accompany the works, including at South Road, Marion Road, Cross Road, Morphett Road, and sections of the Mike Turtur Bikeway, some of which may be complete for extended weeks at night into September 2025.
-
Events such as the Royal Adelaide Show (from 30 August to early September) will have enhanced extra substitute bus services and coordination to manage larger travel demands and parking logistics.
-
The Roads and RAA are urging users to pre-plan their journey during this period due to expected longer travel times, especially during peak conditions.
-
Local businesses in Glenelg, particularly along Jetty Road, have raised concerns about revenue loss during peak summer trade and are calling for targeted support measures from the government.
